Poetry & Presentation Pop-Ups

Do you have a poem-in-progress that you would like some feedback on? Getting ready for an open mic or publication?Preparing for a presentation? Would you like to be heard, and see what pops up?

I'm offering brief 20-minute virtual consultations where we can talk about a poem or presentation you are working on. You can ask me specific questions about your work, or I'm happy to listen and share what resonates. You may book up to 3 slots per (e.g. 1hr per Monday) if you need more time.

Poetry in the Meadow @ Scenic Splendor

Come join us for a spring poetry retreat at Scenic Splendor Nature & Recreation Center and enjoy a relaxing opportunity to work on your writing through both guided nature-inspired prompts and independent creation time. You will have the opportunity to develop several new pieces, and enjoy the atmosphere of the meadow and surrounding features including a schoolhouse style building with wood stove, picnic shelter, and walking paths. Bring a lunch or buy local from The Cookery and we'll pick it up and deliver it to you!

Over lunch we'll hear briefly from Dr. Kristin Buckley (agricultural literacy researcher and owner of Scenic Splendor) whose family history on this land goes back five generations. A special opportunity to learn from her experience and knowledge.

Four hours of dedicated writing time in the meadow! Sunday, May 31st, 10am to 3pm. 6 spots, $125 per person. Email barbara@picnicandpencil to reserve your spot.

Poetry @ the Ports

Did you know that the theme of poetry month in Canada this year is Land and Sea? Come join us April 18th from 1-3pm at the Portsmouth Tavern for a poetry-writing workshop inspired by the beauty of the village, lake, and harbour. All experience levels are welcome. Food and beverage may be purchased from the pub menu.

Come join us for a cozy afternoon poetry workshop for adults, inspired by the beauty of historic Portsmouth Village and Lake Ontario in spring. Some time will be reserved at the end for optional sharing of our work-in-progress. Refreshments available for purchase. All levels of experience welcome.

Virtual Poetry Circle for Teens- 5 sessions

April 27th to June 1st (no class May 18)
7- 8pm
Max. 12 participants, Ages 14 to 17
Regular Cost $189 per participant/Register by April 17th for Early Bird discount $149

A gentle, small group space for thoughtful and shy teens to build confidence, explore their voice, and connect through writing. Let's spend 5 focused sessions devoted to writing together in a variety of forms and styles, each week exploring new guided writing prompts inspired by themes emerging from our shared interests. A creative and calm way to start the week. Our 5th session will be reserved for a virtual reading and/or portfolio share. All levels of experience welcome. Parental consent required.

Upcoming Workshops: Poetry by the Lake

Two poetry workshops offered this July at waterfront parks in Kingston, Ontario. Come join us for a 2 hour guided nature-inspired poetry workshop on the shores of Lake Ontario. Join us for one or both (discount applied if you come to two!).

Spend a lovely evening at Newlands Pavilion or morning at Lake Ontario Park writing by the water and leave with some new material for poems you can develop for publication, open mics, nature journalling, personal enjoyment & wellbeing, creative expression, etc.

The focus of these workshops is on generating new material, not critique -- though there is often an opportunity for optional sharing. $40 or $72 for both. Please e-mail barbara@picnicandpencil.com to reserve your spot and arrange payment.

In Spring 2026, I launched the Picnic & Pencil learning series offering workshops on creative topics such as poetry writing, drama for introverts, and how to craft your own spiritual autobiography. The in-person workshops are held in beautiful places in Kingston and Inverary, Ontario, such as retreat centres, community gardens, churches, parks, farmer's markets, warm cafes, and historic inns.
